The story: in both the process of becoming a marriage and family therapist and throughout my time as a professional, I have attended a lot of trainings and seminars about relationships! There are many theories about how to approach relationship problems. Some approach issues from a problem-solving perspective--identify what the problem is, brainstorm, find solution or compromise. Another approach might be that issues are communication problems and so it's important to learn healthy words and non- verbals to use to express issues respectfully and clearly with each other. I think and have found that these approaches are all helpful but that they may just band-aid the deeper issues--core thinking and feelings beyond what gets said or done. Anyway, a book captures this approach well and it's called "Hold Me Tight" by Susan Johnson. I began using this method with couples and seeing that it was effective in powerful ways. And anyway, don't we all just want to be held tightly?

The story: My car has a license plate reading "UR TNLV" and this bag is named after it. During the early stages of my recovery from an abusive relationship, when depression and anxiety were still very high, it was hard for friends and family to know quite what to do to help. One of my friends sent me a card--in the mail (which is a nice treat these days and shows extra effort) and the cover said something to the effect of "During these hard times remember"--open the card-- "you are talented, needed, valued, and loved." Those simple words said in a simple card became a mantra for me when my mind was spiraling into negative thoughts about myself. This affected my heart in such a helpful way that I made a license plate for it to constantly remind me and others...and now I've named a handbag. May it remind you that you are also talented, needed, valued and loved and that simple actions when we don't know how to help someone we love can go a long way. Don't make helping a complicated thing even if it's a complicated situation. Just love!
